Program Information

School: Vancouver Island University
Faculty: Humanities and Social Sciences
Degree: Bachelor
Field of Study: History, General
Description: History is the study of evidence of past ideas, objects, and actions. In an effort to make sense of such a massive array of material, historians try to understand the past with the aid of chronologies and themes. New evidence and new interests force us to ask new questions about the past. History, therefore, is a living subject – one that is constantly being redefined and reassessed. Once primarily about men, war, and politics, the discipline of History now includes topics relating to gender and aboriginal issues, environmental concerns, family and childhood constructs, and public (applied) history policies. More than ever, History remains essential for the formation of a well-informed, active, productive and responsible citizenry. Much more than just a dialogue with the past, the study of History enables the student better to engage with the present and to prepare for the future.

The study of history also provides excellent preparation for many various professional careers and graduate studies. Many of our students have enjoyed great success in graduate school, whether in History or other disciplines. The skills acquired through the History program are also essential prerequisites for successful careers in a number of vital areas, including teaching, public service, law, journalism, research and public history, NGOs, consultancy – the possibilities are endless.
