|Faculty:||Faculty of Arts and Science|
|Field of Study:||Biology/Biological Sciences, General
|Description:||Specialization in Biology and Mathematics (BIMA) is an intensive course of study with approximately two-thirds of your courses within the discipline with a combination of courses within Biology and Mathematics.There has never been a more exciting time to study Biology, with subjects ranging as broadly as climate change and the conservation of biodiversity, the origin and evolution of life, the form and function of organisms, and the ongoing “omics” revolution at the molecular level. Our program emphasizes interactive learning with hands-on laboratories, small senior seminar modules and field courses. Our department also offers opportunities for field study around the globe — from Argentina to Africa. Understanding the evolution of drug resistant diseases draws upon knowledge of genetics, genomics, epidemiology and population ecology. These are all areas of study steeped in both Biology and Mathematics, and this example just one of many that could be used to highlight the growing need for quantitative literacy in academics, medicine, and industry. The Biology and Mathematics SSP incorporates courses from both departments and combines them with specialized courses in “BioMath” to provide an exceptional learning experience in this emerging field.
Mathematicians seek out patterns, construct rigorous arguments, articulate assumptions, appreciate the value of a precise definition, analyze mathematical models, and create beautiful structures. Statisticians produce trustworthy data, extract meaning and draw practical conclusions from data, test conjectures, provide mathematical evidence, and critique the reasoning of others. In both cases, these skills have a surprising ability to help make sense of the physical, biological, artistic, psychological, economic, social, and philosophical worlds. As a consequence, quantitative expertise is in high demand on the job market. Moreover, rankings of occupations invariably list multiple careers in mathematics and statistics among the very best.
