Degree: Bachelor; Honours
Field of Study: Oceanography, Chemical and Physical
Physics, General
Description: Global climate change, earthquake hazard, natural resource planning, greenhouse gas/ozone-level monitoring, marine pollution, and groundwater contamination are phrases you find daily in the newspaper, and represent but a few of the fields in which earth and ocean scientists make a contribution. The School of Earth and Ocean Sciences (SEOS) at the University of Victoria was the first in Canada to combine the disciplines of earth and ocean sciences in one program and to focus on earth system science. Earth system science seeks to understand the earth’s present and past processes and interactions on a global scale through the integrated study of the solid earth, oceans and atmosphere. These studies encompass global change caused by both natural processes and human activity. This program combines courses from Earth and Ocean Sciences with Physics courses.
