Field of Study: Biology/Biological Sciences, General
Psychology, General
Description: There has never been a more exciting time to study Biology, with subjects ranging as broadly as climate change and the conservation of biodiversity, the origin and evolution of life, the form and function of organisms, and the ongoing “omics” revolution at the molecular level. Our program emphasizes interactive learning with hands-on laboratories, small senior seminar modules and field courses. Our department also offers opportunities for field study around the globe — from Argentina to Africa. Humans and other animals have more in common than you might think. From neurological systems to patterns of behaviour, this four year Subject of Specialization Plan fuses core elements from Biology and Psychology and allows considerable opportunity for upper year specialization and independent study. With an emphasis on cross-disciplinary interaction and integration, the “BioPsych” SSP explores both commonalities and uniquely human features of brain, behaviour and cognition.

The Psychology Department is home to 26 labs where faculty members conduct research in Brain, Behaviour and Cognitive Science, as well as Developmental, Social, and Clinical Psychology. Students have the opportunity to work alongside faculty researchers and graduate students, investigating topics such as sexuality, bullying, mood disorders, and infant cognition. Our Introductory Psychology course uses an innovative and engaging course design to build strong foundational knowledge in the psychological sciences. In addition to lectures, students are guided through concepts using a combination of reading, and interactive on-line materials. Students also work in small groups of 6 to explore psychological phenomena and test theories. This is truly a student-centered approach.
